This new work is called 'One way and no other'. It's a unicursal maze, technically, a labyrinth because there is only one way to walk through it. I painted this with soft silky lime nuances which is unfortunately hard to capture exactly the right way on the photo's. Anyway, just like all art you gotta see it for real, not just on a screen! Facts: Height: 90 cm / 35,4 inch - width: 90 cm / 35,4 inch - depth: 2 cm / 0,8 inch - weight: 2,0 kg - paint (base): lime (soft silk) - relief: hardfoam (styrodur xps) - frame: plain board - estimated hours work: about 40 over a period of 3 weeks. #maze #labyrinth #wallsculpture #dutchart #barrybouman #labyrinthz #labirinto #contemporaryart #modernart #algorithmicart #strongcolor #unicursal #hedendaagsekunst #mazeart #softsilk

This time I applied the algorithm 'binary tree' for generating mazes. This resulted in a maze that starts in one corner and flows out to the other corners. After a 45 degree rotation, the maze starts at the bottom and grows rhythmic to the top (like a tree!). I named this artwork 'The Algorhythm'. Like it or not! Facts: Height: 90 cm / 35,4 inch - width: 90 cm / 35,4 inch - depth: 2 cm / 0,8 inch - weight: 2,0 kg - paint (base): turquoise / ocean blue - relief: hardfoam (styrodur xps) - frame: plain board - estimated hours work: about 40 over a period of 3 weeks. #maze #labyrinth #wallsculpture #dutchart #barrybouman #labyrinthz #contemporaryart #modernart #algorithmicart #strongcolor #binarytree #hedendaagsekunst #binarytree #algorhythm #doolhof

This time an experiment with a maze on a round board. The rough maze structure is cut from one melted/burned piece of hardfoam. Finally, loads of chalkpaint is dropped on the structure, which results in nice cracks after drying in the sun! Enjoy: Algorithms colliding! Facts: Height/width: 70 cm / 27,5 inch - depth: 3 cm / 1,1 inch - weight: 2,2 kg - paint (base): old white and pure white - relief: hardfoam (styrodur xps) - frame: round mdf board - estimated hours work: about 40 over a period of 4 weeks. #maze #labyrinth #wallsculpture #dutchart #barrybouman #labyrinthz #contemporaryart #modernart #algorithmicart #colornuances #imperfection #hedendaagsekunst #algorithm #roundart

Finished today: The Finest Algorithm! This time I used my favourite algorithm for generating mazes. This algorithm, which is invented by an American mathematician Joseph Kruskal, results in a nicely balanced maze. For relief structure, I used heated hardfoam and paint cracks and brushes. Swipe, enjoy and like! Facts: Height: 60 cm / 23,6 inch - width: 60 cm / 23,6 inch - depth: 2 cm / 0,8 inch - weight: 2,0 kg - paint (base): french grey and pure white - relief: hardfoam (styrodur xps) - frame: plain board - estimated hours work: about 40 over a period of 4 weeks. #maze #labyrinth #wallsculpture #dutchart #barrybouman #labyrinthz #contemporaryart #modernart #algorithmicart #colornuances #imperfection #hedendaagsekunst #layeredart #kruskal #algorithm

Labyrinthz artwork number 56 is finished! I called it 'Ochre loops'. Not as spaghetti-like as planned, but still an exciting chaotic structure. Looking closely, you can see all the color nuances, cracks and brush strokes. I hope you like it! Facts: Height: 60 cm / 23,6 inch - width: 60 cm / 23,6 inch - depth: 2 cm / 0,8 inch - weight: 1,5 kg - paint (base): yellow ochre chalkpaint - relief: hardfoam (styrodur xps) - frame: plain board - hours work: about 40 over a period of 4 weeks. #ochre #maze #labyrinth #wallsculpture #dutchart #barrybouman #labyrinthz #contemporaryart #modernart #algorithmicart #artoninstagram #spaghetticode #braidalgorithm #spaghettistructure #colornuances #brushstrokes

Back in my days at the university, I learned some strategies (algorithms) to solve problems like finding a way out through a maze. On my artwork Barry's White I applied one strategy called 'left hand search'. I used colored blocks to make the algorithm visible on the photo. The entrance of the maze is at the bottom, the exit is at the top. Each time a decision for a direction has to be made, the left side is chosen. If the path ends, the next turn left is taken. This results in finding a rather efficient way out as shown on the photo. The red blocks represent visited paths, the yellow blocks represent the path to the way out at the top. Is this ART-ificial intelligence? #lefthandsearch #searchalgorithm #solvemaze #ai #artificialintelligence #searchstrategy #searchtechique #maze #mazeart
